If you’re looking for a new place to visit on Kauai’s north coast, head to Common Ground Kauai, an 83-acre agricultural campus that provides guests with convenient access to Kilauea Stone Dam, farm tours, and a lounge. A restaurant will be opening shortly.
In 2018, the idea of Common Ground was developed. It is based on regenerative practices and aims to establish a platform for talks around food. It opened in 2021 but later closed as a result of the pandemic. However, farm visits have been wholly reinstated, and lounge nights have been reintroduced.
For the whole experience, Gary Moore, president of Common Ground Kauai, advised visitors to arrive at about 2 p.m. so they may quickly climb to the lovely Kilauea Stone Dam before taking the farm tour.
What’s included
The dam was constructed in the late 1800s during the height of the sugar plantation era. It has since evolved into a tranquil, contemplative destination. Guided tours are available to learn more about the sugar plantation’s past, and it is only a half-mile from Common Ground’s land.
After leaving the dam, visitors can take the farm tour, available Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., which walks visitors through an agroforest to teach them more about it.
“It’s a regenerative form of agriculture where there are literally rows of trees, and the way it’s structured is that you have the various fruits and vegetables that are protected in certain layers; vines grow up and you run cattle and chickens through for fertilization,” said Moore.
“The regenerative aspect, whatever you have growing, cucumbers or cherry tomatoes, they move through the cycle naturally very much like what happens in the Amazon forest.”
After the tour, visitors may participate in a sunset lounge night. In addition, there will be live regional entertainment, wine, beer, and locally sourced food.
Visitors can also explore the retail and farm store for local items, and Common Ground anticipates remodeling the property’s shuttered restaurant next year.
“The full vision of Common Ground is to really create a platform, a place where people can gather,” Moore said.
